In BC there are 2 groups the BC government has identified as highest priority for the reduction of carbon emissions. These groups are large industrial polluters, and public sector organizations. The legislation and approach taken for each of these groups is slightly different. As a means of understanding each, we’ve included links to the BC government programs.
- Large industrial polluters, follow the B.C. Output-Based Pricing System – Province of British Columbia(OBPS) and pay for greenhouse gas emissions over their threshold ($ amount changes over time, and can use credits or BC Carbon Registry offset units to offset some obligations)
- Public sector organizations, follow the Carbon Neutral Government program – Province of British Columbia and pay $25 for offset units for their organization’s in-scope emissions.
Paper is an in-scope emission that must be tracked, and offset. The paper category with the lowest carbon emissions as defined by the BC government is 100% recycled copy paper. For the purpose of carbon calculation in BC, Sugar Sheet copy paper is classified as 100% recycled copy paper.
If your organization pays to offset its paper usage, Sugar Sheet copy paper is the best alternative to not printing. Its price is comparable with low cost virgin copy paper, and it provides the lowest carbon emissions footprint available today.
